Les Studios Palace has announced the release of Roots Balafon, a free virtual instrument for Kontakt, featuring a balafon – a kind of wooden xylophone or percussion idiophone which plays melodic tunes.

Roots Balafon virtual instrument was created by Thomas Zago and Didier Robin during a training called “Sampling and Creation of Virtual Instruments” hosted by Julien Tauban from October 28th to November 1st, 2019, at Studios Palace in Moulins, France. The balafon was recorded using 2 stereo microphone setups (Schoeps CMC6U and a Neumann U87) with 6 velocity levels and 2 round robins. The instrument is originally pentatonic, but Les Studio Palace’s version is chromatic.

The virtual instrument is playable from G-1 to E3 and includes the main patch (“Roots Balafon”) and some bonus presets. It comes with basic effects such as 3-band equalizer, delay, compressor, and mono.

Roots Balafon requires a full version of Native Instruments Kontakt version 5.3 and above; in the Kontakt Player version, the instruments will load in demo mode. For those that don’t own Kontakt, bear in mind there’s a folder of WAV’s included (48kHz, 24-bit).
